How to use the Online Microphone Test

Welcome to KeyMouseHub's Mic Tester. This tool is designed to diagnose your audio input quality directly in your browser, without installing any software. Whether you are preparing for a Zoom meeting, a Discord gaming session, or checking if your new headset is working properly, our visualizer gives you instant feedback.

Step-by-Step Guide

  • 1. Grant Permission: Click the blue "Allow Microphone Access" button above. Your browser will ask for permission—click "Allow" to enable the audio stream.
  • 2. Visual Check (Waveform): Speak into your microphone. If the green visualizer bar moves in sync with your voice, your hardware is detected and working.
  • 3. Playback Test (Crucial): To ensure your voice doesn't sound robotic or too quiet, click the "Record 3s Test" button. Speak a short phrase, and the tool will play it back to you exactly as others hear it.
  • 4. Identify Device: Check the bottom of the tool to see which microphone is active (e.g., "Default - Headset Microphone").

Diagnosing Common Audio Problems

Why isn't your microphone working? Here are the most common defects our tool helps identify:

  • Flatline (No Movement): If the visualizer stays flat, your browser might be blocking access, or the physical mute switch on your headset cord is ON.
  • Robotic or Choppy Voice: Use the "Record 3s Test". If your voice sounds like a robot, you may have a sample rate mismatch in your Windows Sound Settings (try changing from 48000Hz to 44100Hz).
  • Background Static: If the bar moves even when you are silent, your microphone gain (sensitivity) is too high. Lower it in your system settings to reduce static noise.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this microphone test secure?
Yes, 100%. We use your browser's local API to process the audio. Your voice never leaves your computer and is never uploaded to our servers.
Why can't the tool find my microphone?
Ensure that you have clicked "Allow" on the browser pop-up. If you denied it by mistake, click the lock icon next to the URL bar (top left) and reset permissions. Also, check if your microphone is physically plugged in properly.
What is a good result?
A healthy microphone should show a responsive green wave when you talk and go nearly flat when you are silent. If the wave hits the top constantly (clipping), your volume is too loud.
