How to use the Online Keyboard Tester

Welcome to KeyMouseHub. This tool is designed to test every key on your keyboard directly in your browser, instantly and for free. Whether you are troubleshooting a mechanical keyboard, a laptop, or a wireless device, our tool helps you diagnose hardware issues without installing any software.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Press a Key: Start typing on your physical keyboard.
  2. Visual Feedback: Watch the virtual keyboard on the screen. Keys will turn Green when they are successfully detected.
  3. Check for Issues: If a key physically clicks but does not light up on the screen, you may have a dead switch or connection issue.
  4. Reset: Use the "Reset" button to clear the visual history and start over.

Diagnosing Common Keyboard Problems

Why should you test your keyboard? Here are the most common defects our tool detects:

1. Ghosting & N-Key Rollover

The Test: Try pressing multiple keys simultaneously (e.g., W + A + S + D + Space).
The Issue: If some keys don't light up while others are pressed, your keyboard is suffering from "Ghosting." This is common in cheaper membrane keyboards and can be fatal for gaming.

2. Dead Keys & Unresponsive Switches

The Test: Press each key individually.
The Issue: If a key feels normal (it clicks) but doesn't turn green, the electrical contact might be dirty or the switch broken. In mechanical keyboards, this often happens due to dust accumulation inside the switch housing.

3. Stuck or "Chattering" Keys

The Issue: If you press a key once but see it blink rapidly or type double characters (e.g., "tt" instead of "t"), your switch is "chattering." This indicates a failing switch contact.

Troubleshooting: Why is my key not working?

My "Windows" or "Menu" key is ignored

If the Win key isn't lighting up, you likely have Gaming Mode enabled. Brands like Razer, Corsair, Logitech, and HyperX include a feature to lock the Windows key to prevent accidental minimizing of games. Look for a "Padlock" icon or try pressing Fn + Win to unlock it.

My F1-F12 keys control volume/brightness instead

On many laptops (Dell, HP, Lenovo) and MacBooks, the F-keys act as media controls by default. To test the actual F1-F12 inputs, try holding the Fn key while pressing them.

Mac vs. Windows Layouts

This tester uses the standard ANSI layout. If you are on a Mac, the "Command" (Cmd) key will likely light up as the "Windows" (Win) key, and "Option" will light up as "Alt". This is normal behavior.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this keyboard test safe?
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. We do not record, save, or transmit your keystrokes to any server. Your privacy is 100% protected.

How do I fix a broken key?
For mechanical keyboards, try removing the keycap and cleaning the switch with compressed air or a drop of isopropyl alcohol. For membrane keyboards or laptops, the issue is often dust under the silicone dome.
